Leeds' Blue Plaques Scheme

The Blue Plaques Scheme in the city of Leeds was launched in 1987 by the Leeds Civic Trust to celebrate and promote Leeds' heritage by erecting blue plaques to recognise important people, events and buildings with ‘special importance in the history, heritage or shaping of Leeds.’
To date over 160 blue plaques, round, normally 18 inches in diameter, and made of cast aluminium, have been erected.
The scheme is financed through the sponsorship of individuals, organisations and businesses.
The blue plaque scheme is not unique to Leeds and a full list of blue plaques worldwide can be found at:Open Plaques

About This Website

This website implements markers for 161 blue plaques, 107 were provided with the course assessment and the additional blue plaques obtained from DataMill Blue Plaques
Converting coordinates: The coordinate (lat and long) for the each blue plaque was individually converted from British National Grid to WGS84 by using this website BNG to WGS84 Converter
Googlemap API and MarkerClustering : To avoid having a crowded map with too many markers overlapping, Google MarkerClusterer was used to cluster the markers.
An example of using Google Markerclustering is located at: Google Marker Clusterer The MarkerClusterer library and map icons used are located at Google Marker Clusterer Library

Search facility(Sidebar with list of names): To implement a user friendly map, searching by blue plaques’ names has been provided via a sidebar listing each blue plaque's name which is also a link to the marker on the map for the associated blue plaque.
Information on implementing sidebar with clusters is located at: Stackoverflow Sidebar and here Sidebar with Clustering Example
